From Britain, here comes what looks like a feel-good underdog story about two rock bands in Dublin, based on a memoir by Telegraph critic Neil McCormick. Ben Barnes plays McCormick, the frontman for an up and coming rock n roll band who are competing for the spotlight with their friends' band...U2. Whoa. Bummer.
And so let's reassess: Is it really fair to tout Killing Bono as a feel-good British hit in the vein of Billy Elliot or The Full Monty? I mean, watching a band compete for attention against U2 is like watching a movie about Tom Cruise trying to kill Hitler. Inglorious Bastards notwithstanding, I think we know how this plays out.
For the most part, the trailer looks like fun anyway. The only laugh out loud moment I found is the last riff on "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," but the based-on-a-true-story hook of taking on what arguably became the biggest band in the world is enough to grab my interest. Plus I want to see how they spin the ending.
Verdict: Sold.
