Every now and then, a high-concept hook comes along that seems so perfect, so in-line with Hollywood's zeitgeist, that you can only marvel that it took so long to become a movie. Take the pitch for Starbuck: A mid-20s slacker makes ends meet by donating his sperm for money until his life gets turned upside down by news that he is the father of 533 children. Judd Apatow, how did you let Quebec beat you to this? In any case, the teaser has hit the internet, so let's start the countdown for the sale of the American remake rights.
Besides being hilarious and marketable, it's actually a pretty intriguing idea for a film, though it's hard to tell from this teaser whether director Ken Scott really delves into the tough questions raised by the situation. On that note, the trailer does not contain subtitles. But from the opening scene in which a doctor gives the slacker a pile of hustler magazines to the male bonding and pop music that takes over during the second half, all of the beats are pretty clear. Just imagine Seth Rogen or Adam Sandler in the lead and mark your calendar for some summer in the near future.
Verdict: Score for Canada
