VIDEO: District 9 Director Gets into Viral Marketing With Mystery Clip

neill Blomkamp short 225.jpgA mysterious video from District 9 director Neill Blomkamp popped up in the digital iPad version of WiReD Magazine - and nobody knows what it is! In the clip itself, two guys find a dead monster (or possibly alien), and then a dead something else in the distance. A circular stamp on the side reads: "18.12 AGM Heartland Pat Pend USA." Don't worry, I've tried entering every version of that phrase into a web browser to no avail. Though if anyone is better than me with anagrams and has some other suggestions, chime in. So yes, it could be a promo for Blomkamp's upcoming sci-fi film Elysium...or something else.

According to / Film, a Beverly Hills-based company named Sable Productions Ltd. filed for the trademark "AGM Heartland" on October 18, 2010 with the trademark use labeled as:

Entertainment services by way of an online website with video, audio and textual content and images featuring characters and storylines about a fictional genetic engineering company that produces genetically engineered and altered organisms.

But who knows, maybe that's just production company for the film's viral marketing campaign. Regardless, based on how slick and effective this clip is, and on Blomkamp's previous work, I nominate him to document the actual alien/monster apocalypse when that happens. He's clearly a bit frustrated with reality as it is. Check out the clip below.
