While you're waiting for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies to arrive and finally deliver the blood-splattered Victorian-era zombie comedy that we all so desperately need, take a look at the trailer Cary Fukunaga's Jane Eyre and reflect on how truly scary Victorian-era England can be. According to this preview, it's actually horrifying, with an atmosphere of dread and despair that would probably make even the undead want to cower in a corner.
Starring Mia Wasikowska in the titular role, the trailer plays up the dark, brooding aspects of Charlotte Brontë's novel with a gray color palate and plenty of fog, rain and fire. And in case the child abuse, Victorian repression, threats of damnation and subtle supernatural touches don't get under your skin, the trailer's creepy stop-and-start score finishes the job. Prepare to be terrified of going to church, falling in love and moving into big houses.
This novel has been adapted to death, but the stylish trailer does a great job of separating this new version from the rest. Also, the supporting cast including Judi Dench, Michael Fassbender and Sally Hawkins is stellar, and Fukunaga's Sin Nombre showed great promise.
VERDICT: Sold.
