Roland Emmerich Discovers Cloverfield; Plans To Direct Cloverfield-Style Movie

Professional world-destroyer Roland Emmerich must have finally gotten Netflix, because his new movie bears an eerie similarity to Cloverfield. Called The Zone it features a cast of unknowns as they deal with the average-guy's view of an alien invasion, using the "found footage" of one of the characters, all for the super-low budget of $5 million. Hmmmmm....

Not only that, but 'ol Rollo is dipping into some Mike Leigh territory, saying that most of the dialogue will be "improv-based." On the one hand, it's not like we'll miss any of his gems like "Welcome to Earth!" but let's hope it's stays away from the free-range, awful improv of the Blair Witch Project. Here's a hint, future movie-improv-ers: when it doubt of what to say, don't just swear a lot repeatedly; it ends up looking pretty lame.

And although it's aping the style of Cloverfield -- and to a lesser degree the upcoming Battle: Los Angeles -- I still actually want to see it. I've got a soft spot for Roland Emmerich and his movies. They may be dumb at times, but they're usually a lot of fun. Except for Godzilla. Lord, did that blow.

Besides, the man could keep cranking out 'splosion flicks one after the other, but, instead Emmerich is just finishing up a movie about Shakespearean authorship and now he wants to make an alien movie for a fraction of his usual budget. Do you think Michael Bay would try that? I say, shine on Roland Emmerich, you crazy diamond! Just stay from Japanese monsters.
