As the trailer for I Love You Phillip Morris opens, the text on-screen reads as follows: "This Christmas, guess who's coming?" Haw? Nah. Not even the site of Jim Carrey violently thrusting behind some bearded stranger can make that lame joke work. But other than the chyron, I Love You Phillip Morris looks surprising bouncy and fun. Carrey owns the screen, with a performance that seems to thread the needle between his serious and non-serious fare. There's a lightness to his step (no pun intended) and his voice over -- something that's especially tricky since he's forced to affect a Southern drawl. The little glimpsed of Ewan McGregor basically confirms that this is Carrey's show, despite the fact that McGregor's plays the titular lover.
Anyway, it's all very randy and "shocking," but there's probably a heart, too, as witnessed by the prison-bed-cuddling. After three years, why not support this one?
VERDICT: Sold.
