Weekend Receipts: Social Network Sends Secretariat To The Glue Factory

Proving that a movie about Facebook could be just as addictive as the actual Facebook, The Social Network was number one at the box office again this week, while Katherine Heigl proved likable enough at number two and Secretariat hobbled in at number three. Meanwhile Wes Craven did something with a bunch of teens and we mostly ignored it at number five. Your box office receipts are here.

1. The Social Network

Gross: $15,500,000 ($46,069,000)

Screens: 2,771 (PSA: $5,594)

Weeks: 2 (change:-30.9%)

If this doesn't end up with a boatload of Oscar nominations, I'll eat my hat. But in between throwing accolades at David Fincher, Aaron Sorkin, Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield, I hope they remember to throw a little love at Armie Hammer, who played the Ubermesnchy WInklevoss twins. Behind Eisenberg, he seemed the actor who was the best at wringing every last Sorkiny nuance from Sorkin's Sorkinesque dialogue.

2. Life As We Know It

Gross: $14,635,000 (new)

Screens: 3,150 (PSA: $4,646)

Weeks: 1

NOT A SPOILER IN THE LEAST, but if you want me to turn on your movie quickly, then kill off Christine Hendricks in the first ten minutes and then make me spend the rest of the time with Katherine Heigl.

3. Secretariat

Gross: $12,600,000 (new)

Screens: 3,072 (PSA: $4,102)

Weeks: 1

Somewhere at the Chateau Marmont, at a VIP table littered with empty Vodka bottles and lines of blow, Seabiscuit raised his head, grimly whinnied and said, "Listen kid, I'll tell you the same thing I told Sarah Jessica Parker: this is a one-horse town and I'm it. I run this bitch, so don't even try to come up here and take my business! Now get out of here before I shove a carrot up your ass and make you talk to Alan Young."

4. Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole

Gross: $7,015,000 ($39,401,000)

Screens: 3,235 (PSA: $2,175)

Weeks: 3 (change:-35.6%)

Directors love to re-team with actors that they had a good rapport with, so with the news that Guardians director Zack Snyder will be helming the new Superman movie, look for the crucial role of Lois Lane to be played by a Long-Tufted Screech Owl, which will be an ENORMOUS improvement over Kate Bosworth.

5. My Soul To Take

Gross: $6,919,000 (new)

Screens: 2,572 (PSA: $2,690)

Weeks: 1

There is a chunk of a truly ridiculous dialogue from this movie you can hear in a TV spot: "If something dead was evil enough, could it come back to life?" Feel free to utilize this framework for your daily life as I did: "If a kitten was adorable enough, could it come back to life?" "If a previously eaten cookie was delicious enough, could it re-appear in the cookie jar?"
