At first, the trailer for this very buzzed-about festival hit looks like an unnecessary rehash of shaky-cam no budget horror. Three documentary filmmakers journey into the wilderness, complete with dated Michael Moore jokes, and meet up with a guy who claims to be a troll hunter. They follow him, but seem skeptical until -- wait, what's this slime on the wheel of the jeep? Yep, looks like The Blair Troll Project. But then...out come the trolls! And actually, they are something to behold.
They don't talk or ask for tolls or carry any clubs that I could see. But they are huge. And there are a lot of them. Some can step on cars, some have three heads, and some are combustible. They look a little cheesy sometimes, but overall I was pretty impressed -- I haven't seen creatures like this before in a movie. Yes, it looks like Cloverfield or Jurassic Park filmed in hand-held at a few places, but the trailer also hints at a sly sense of humor as it progresses, particularly with a running joke about trolls going after the blood of Christians. Funny! Besides, we need some sort of creature to take over when this vampire craze dies down, right?
