So, to the New York constituency, you know how the weather is supposed to suck on Sunday? And how there's that lag in between the late-afternoon NFL games and the one at night with the horrible broadcasters you always mute until switching over to Mad Men at 10? Well, good news: I have just the indoor activity to help you enjoyably pass that precious rainy-day time! (Don't worry; you can keep your clothes on.)
The wonderful documentary filmmaker Daniel Kraus is bring his latest wonderful documentary Professor to New York City this weekend -- to Brooklyn, specifically, at Union Docs. As noted here in an interview not so long ago, the film follows University of Iowa professor and straight-shooting rabbi Jay Holstein on his stream-of-consciousness train through Judeo-Christian theology, bored freshmen, gun ownership, marriage-rite rationalizing, and more than a few charismatic rants and homilies.
Further refining the technique of his earlier Work Series efforts Sheriff and Musician, Kraus follows Holstein with a tense objectivity, seemingly creeping up on his subject's every breath even when filming slow zooms from way across the street or the back row of a lecture hall.
I can't recommend Kraus or his films enough, and this rare presentation will be a fancy-pants NYC premiere at which Kraus and I will humbly preside with Cinema Purgatorio impresario Ray Privett -- and to which you are invited. Swell people! Q&A! Great movie! Clear your social calendar and/or set your DVR, because babe, we got a date.
