Kenny Powers Gets a Gun in the Trailer for Eastbound & Down

powers_225.jpg"A man who has seen the things I've seen; experienced the loss and pain that I've experienced... I transcend race, hombre." So says Kenny Powers at the beginning of the first real trailer for the second season of HBO's Eastbound & Down. That the disgraced former Major Leaguer -- who escaped to Mexico during the season one finale -- has a wicked set of cornrows should come as no surprise to anyone who has seen a subway ad or billboard promoting the Sept. 26 premiere. That Powers has a collection of firearms, however, might.

As the trailer shows, Powers is living it up in Mexico as season two dawns -- that means betting money on cockfights, wrapping himself in the American flag and pitching for the Mexican League. (Note: Good thing Danny McBride is perfection as Kenny Powers, because his baseball scenes continue to be laughable in a bad way.) It also means machine guns and a Dirty Harry-sized hand cannon. Because, why not?

There are glimpses of new cast members Michael Pena and Ana de la Reguera (as the owner of Kenny's Mexican League team and his new girlfriend, respectively), but as usual, this is McBride's show. Judging from the 30 seconds shown here, he hasn't lost an ounce of bravado, pathos or attitude. Though hopefully he loses the cornrows sooner rather than later.

VERDICT: Muy bien.
