1. Resident Evil: Afterlife
Gross: $27,700,000 (new)
Screens: 3,203 (PSA: $8,648)
Weeks: 1
I cannot believe that this is the fourth installment of this series. I see a lot of movies and I'd be hard-pressed to tell you absolutely anything about any of the previous films, except that Michelle Rodriguez is in the first one. But, hey, the more successful these things are, maybe the closer we come to a Fifth Element sequel. Multi-pass anyone?
2. Takers
Gross: $6,100,000 ($48,105,000)
Screens: 2,191 (PSA: $2,784)
Weeks: 3 (change: -43.9%)
When no one was looking, Hayden Christensen became the secret king of Hollywood, thanks to this steadily chugging little flick. Sure, some may point to the wide, popular appeal of T.I., but I say never underestimated the universal draw of a whisper-thin Canadian and his porkpie hat.
3. The American
Gross: $5,896,000 ($26,731,000)
Screens: 2,833 (PSA: $2,081)
Weeks: 2 (change: -55.3%)
Oh, George. We complain about crap movies littering the multiplex but when a solid, well-done movie for grown-ups comes along, we give it the cold shoulder. Oh, well. I guess we can look forward to Takers 2: Already Tooken in a few, scant months. It's what we deserve.
4. Machete
Gross: $4,200,000 ($32,477,000)
Screens: 2,6784 (PSA: $1,568)
Weeks: 2 (change:-63.2%)
And while I'm kvetching, I'm mystified how this one is drawing so low while The Expendables is nearing the $100 million mark. It's nearly the same idea, but Machete is a little more accepting of its camp value. And it has more boobs! We'll never get to Machete Kills Again at this rate.
5. Going the Distance
Gross: $3,835,000 ($14,000,000)
Screens: 3,030 (PSA: $1,266)
Weeks: 2 (change:-44.3%)
And then there's this thing. Critics didn't care for it and people sure as heck ain't seeing it. So please welcome Justin Long to the NBC Must See TV family next season!
