My Soul to Take Trailer: Wes Craven's Scream 4 Warmup

It's been five years since Wes Craven last directed a film (the solid little Rachel McAdams thriller Red Eye), and sixteen years since he directed one that he wrote himself (Wes Craven's New Nightmare). The new My Soul to Take ends both of those droughts, but the new trailer isn't exactly thirst-quenching.

Sure, many of the Craven trademarks are there (a hulking figure is terrorizing attractive, CW-ready teens, and there may be a supernatural element if one of those high schoolers really is the reincarnation of a serial killer, as they suspect), but it all feels a little pat. Perhaps I'm just more enamored of the psychological terror in today's Black Swan trailer, but when it comes to Craven's upcoming projects, I'd rather wait for Scream 4 -- troubled though it may be.

VERDICT: Pass.
