The Big C [Showtime, 10:30 PM]
In the series premiere, Cathy (Laura Linney) begins the process of telling her loved ones she is dying of skin cancer. The pilot is funny, and I've long sought another comedy that takes place in Minneapolis. Score one for Showtime and keeping up the legacy of The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
Bachelor Pad [ABC, 8 PM]
The 17 remaining contestants compete in a particularly trying stunt, one involving activities like "trying not to vomit." Perfect. Weatherman Jonathan's constitution is memorably stormy!
Weeds [Showtime, 10 PM]
Weeds took an improbably dark turn at the end of its last season, and now, following Pilar's murder, Nancy (Mary Louise motherf*cking Parker) and the boys are fugitives in the season premiere. I've warmed up to this craziness and have decided it's the best set-up for a sixth season ever. Take that, Lost.
The Devil Wears Prada [FX, 8 PM]
Say what you will about the Disney-like whimsicality of this movie, but it remains compulsively watchable even after a half-dozen viewings. Not that anyone writing this would know. Anne Hathaway stars as an upstart journalist who begins working for fashion-mag sorceress Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) and she loses touch with the people who supposedly mean most to her. The message of the film is clear: Succumbing to materialism is the easiest way to end up looking fabulous.
