Shania Twain is Reportedly American Idol's Back-Up Plan for Jennifer Lopez

Now that Jennifer Lopez's reported gig as the newest American Idol judge may be in jeopardy, TMZ reports that onetime Idol mentor Shania Twain is the producers' choice for her backup. Is the former Eilleen Edwards, whose chances for winning a job on Idol were recently declared slim, really an ideal panelist?

At the very least, she'd at least be a better fit for full-time judging than Jennifer Lopez. As Movieline has pointed out before, Lopez would waste our time playing inside the lines, offering none of the sass I associate with her debut disc On the 6. Instead, she'd give us the boring non-candor you might've glimpsed in her recent Behind the Music episode. That's not sustainable for a whole season.

Twain's not exactly Nikita Khrushchev in comparison, but she proved during her guest mentor stint on Idol this season that she's anxious and precise when it comes to grading vocals. She's got stage mother urgency and the ability to care (which Lopez certainly lacks), and you don't emerge from a marriage to producer Mutt Lange with less than a production virtuoso's vocabulary. There's potential here for Shania to impress us -- much. And I am suggesting that wearing leopard catsuits would be a real start.
