Matthew Weiner Apparently Unsure of the Definition of 'Spoiler'

Matthew Weiner might need to re-watch the season three finale of Mad Men. The series' mercurial creator is up-in-arms about NYT television critic Alessandra Stanley's allegedly spoiler-heavy review of the season premiere because it reveals -- spoiler? -- that Don and Betty are no longer married. How dare she?

Weiner was apparently "shocked -- really shocked" to read Stanley's review. "I would love to have it known that this was done totally without my approval," he said, as if showrunners now need to approve critical analysis and reviews of their programs beforehand. Never mind that during the season three finale, Weiner showed Betty and Henry Francis visiting a divorce lawyer. Or that penultimate shot featuring Betty on a flight to Reno -- with Henry -- to establish residency so she could file for divorce. (Also: Don asking Joan to find him an apartment, her apologizing and the closing shot of him walking into his new building.) Not since "Who Shot J.R.?" was a cliffhanger so debated and anticipated! Said Weiner: "A lot of people told me they were blindsided by [the Stanley review]," perhaps proving that a lot of Weiner's friends don't actually watch Mad Men.

Besides the divorce reveal, Stanley's review also mentions that Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce is up and running and that Don eats chicken à la Kiev at Jimmy's La Grange with a date -- crucial plot points that will no doubt ruin the experience of watching Mad Men on Sunday night. For their part, AMC doesn't seem to mind: the Mad Men Web site linked to Stanley's review, warning readers that it contained "mild spoilers."
