Bryan Singer Talks Up Taylor Lautner and X-Men -- in Church

Bryan Singer dropped by Hollywood United Methodist Church on Sunday, when the church's ongoing "Crossflix" series featured a discussion of the religious and spiritual themes of the X-Men franchise. Which, as it always will these days, ultimately came down to, "Please, please, God, let Taylor Lautner be in our franchise reboot."

In addition to explaining the thematic roots of X-Men ("[It] was about people who feel disenfranchised and separate from the rest of the world, and that is what Stan Lee meant when he created the characters. Lee, who is Jewish, told me it was about persecution, and he also created it during the time of the Civil Rights movement.") and the Christ-like implications of Superman Returns ("He was a powerful being in human form with all the frailties and temptations"), Singer provided what may very well be the first Taylor Lautner "scoop" delivered in a house of God:

"I wanted Taylor [Lautner] to do it, I really did," Singer said in an exclusive interview. "He's doing a movie in Pittsburgh called Abduction and then he's got the next Twilight movie. We talked about it a lot, he is a friend, and I really wanted to make it work. It just doesn't look like it's possible to do it."

Singer also blew off rumors that he'd direct Wolverine 2, insisting he's starting Jack the Giant Killer next year in London. Fine. Enough with the churches, though! It's a little self-important, and anyway, The Coffee Bean will get jealous.
