The Hills Reality Check: Finale Mind-Bender

Reality and unreality finally converged in last night's season finale of The Hills, better known as "The Episode Where the Cast and Crew Admit Their Show Is Fake." You heard right! If you haven't seen the closer, "All Good Things..." then you might want to to hold off on clicking through for now... unless you'd like to finally know how much of MTV's six-year project was just a cruel joke on you. (Hint: If you were bored enough to watch last night's closer, then you've been punk'd by Brody.)

REAL: Lo Wants Lots of Little Babies, Stephanie Wants a Man Who Will Finish Her Sentence Fragments

Of all the meaningless plots floating around last night's finale (more on why they did not matter here), two stories seemed authentic:

1. Lo would compromise her morals to move in with her boyfriend.

Even though, Lo had told her boyfriend just last week that she would not live with him until they were engaged, Lo decided to compromise herself because she, squeal, wanted lots of little babies.

2. Stephanie would actively pursue a dim-witted motocross-racer.

Lo decided to Spencer's sister continued pursuing Brody's pal last night with come-on lines guaranteed to cement their transitory relationship like: "You're like the manliest guy I've ever dated. But at the same time, the sweetest too. I like hanging out with you a lot."

FAKE: Pretty Much Everything Else

For The Hills, last night's final scene was très ambitious. Brody waved goodbye to Kristin (who was allegedly en route to the airport where she would fly to a generic European country and meet the man of her dreams, even though she has admitted to being in a relationship with a cameraman on the show), and her town car pulled away with Brody looking despondent. Cameras then pulled pack to reveal that Brody was standing on a sound stage that was being disassembled. The fact that the series is mostly fake is not surprising (thanks to our trusty Reality Checks) but the fact that MTV would admit to the show being fake is surprising. More surprising though: Why was Brody -- a secondary cast member -- appointed to that reveal?

Explained Brody during the after-show, "We kinda left everybody with 'Well. you'll never know what's real and what's fake.' It's your own interpretation." Take that, world.
