The Jack Goes Boating Trailer: Philip Seymour Hoffman Goes Swimming

If today was Sundance Movie Trailer Day, then why wasn't it listed on my Google Calendar? Anyway, here comes the trailer for Philip Seymour Hoffman's directorial debut Jack Goes Boating, a Sundance fave that answers the question: Why was Philip Seymour Hoffman wearing dreads during his red carpet appearances last year?

Based on the off-Broadway play of the same name, Hoffman stars as the titular Jack, a limo driver with a reggae fixation (dreads!) who is unlucky in love until he's set up with Connie (the always lovely Amy Ryan). Meanwhile, as the new love birds form a relationship, their mutual friends (John Ortiz and Daphne Rubin-Vega) see their marriage start to unravel. It all looks perfectly heartbreaking and touching -- thanks, in part, due to the use of Fleet Foxes -- and Hoffman is at his mumbling introverted best. Of course Ryan steals the show, but then again, when doesn't she? Fun fact with which to impress your date when you see this at the movies later this evening: With the exception of Ryan, the other three leads originated their parts in Bob Glaudini's play.

Unfortunately, with distributor Overture in a bit of trouble, who knows when this one will actually hit theaters? It's scheduled for Sept. 17, but if it does finally see the light of day, Jack Goes Boating should certainly be worth your dollars. And probably a few tears.

VERDICT: Sold.
