The Hills Reality Check: Birthdays, Boats and Bad Decisions

Last night, the Richard Burton and the Liz Taylor of The Hills -- Justin Bobby and Audrina -- reunited again after breaking up with their respective lovers. It was only a matter of time before the two found their way back each other's loving arms -- and last night's 99th episode of the series, which will be better known to fans as "The One Where Brody Complains About Hat Hair," was the perfect opportunity for a shipside rekindling. So change into your boating gear and join us on lido deck to see which moments hit Movieline's Real/Fake jackpot this week.

REAL: Kristin and Justin Bobby Had Not Planned On Wearing Matching Cut-Off Shirts

While jaded viewers assume that most of what happens on The Hills is carefully coordinated by MTV production teams, certain things just cannot be planned -- like Kristin and Justin Bobby's matching tops during one of last night's many dimly lit restaurant scenes. Per usual, the pair was meeting to deliver a few plot-forwarding lines while curiously never ordering food or drink.

When Justin walked into the restaurant wearing a sleeveless flannel shirt, genuine excitement washed over Kristin's face. "Oh, we're matching!" she yelped.

Justin Bobby smiled and replied, "I can't believe we're both wearing cut-offs. Jeez."

It was moments like these -- these happy coincidences that made both cast members happy to be part of MTV's Hills. Well, those and the paychecks.

FAKE: Next Week's Trip to Costa Rica Was Planned Spontaneously

Last night, Brody interrupted Audrina's boat party with this non sequitur: "I'm going to Costa Rica next week!" Brody was supposed to have found a way to organically weave that declaration into the cast's conversation but he was tired -- tired of pretending that he cared about Audrina on her 25th birthday, tired of acting like he was interested in Kristin, tired of feeling like MTV's puppet. So he spat out those words and waited for the cast to bite, as per the director's instruction.

"Who are you going with? Can we go?"

"Sure," said Brody. "Plan a trip right now."

Within seconds, the lady cast -- Stephanie, Kristin and Audrina -- had dropped all of their other plans for next week to go on this faux-spontaneous trip.

Now for what actually happened: MTV producers needed a special way to ring in the show's 100th episode, so they bought the entire cast first class tickets to Costa Rica months and months ago. Tune in next week to see how the cast celebrates their anniversary. Something tells me that it will include a McKaela run-in, a hook-up between Audrina and Justin Bobby and no less than two conversations about how far the cast has come over the show's seven seasons.
