I know it seems like his exploits were only yesterday, but infamous, God-swindling Vatican CFO* Rafaello Follieri is about halfway through his prison sentence for fraud. (He is scheduled to be released in May 2010 2012.) Meanwhile, the jewelry and other fine accessories he bought for ex-girlfriend Anne Hathaway with fraudulently acquired cash -- thus making them fraudulently acquired bling, and poor Anne none the wiser -- are only now landing on the auction block, thanks the U.S. Government. The Smoking Gun has photos and listings of the presumed six-figures' worth of stuff Follieri amassed from Tiffany, Cartier and other top-shelf retailers before bequeathing it to Hathaway. The inventory conveniently breaks down the items by what was found at their Fifth Avenue apartment, Follieri's Bronx storage outlet, and from Hathaway herself (including the sapphire cross above). The latter category would seem to me the most valuable class of artifacts, though the glaring omission of Hathaway's rumored nude photos stashed in the Bronx leaves one massive loose end remaining to be tied. One can only presume Hathaway has them if they exist, though heaven knows an auction of their own might have balanced the federal budget. Alas.
