Weekend Receipts: Let's Hear It For The Toy

Finally, finally, FINALLY. After months of forcing ourselves to dine on just-decent enough movies -- yeah, I guess Iron Man 2 was fun, Mickey Rourke was a hoot at least -- we have ourselves a true blue certified, Good Movie to talk about...contrarian d-bags be damned. And as a result, the moviegoing masses -- sick of having to subsist on a thin diet of gruel and MacGruber -- flocked to Toy Story 3 in record breaking numbers. Oh, and Jonah Hex totally bombed. 1. Toy Story 3

Gross: $109,000,000 ($109,000,000)

Screens: 4,028 (PSA: $27,061)

Weeks: 1

This is largest opening in Pixar history, blowing Finding Nemo's $70 million out of the water. But please, sweet merciful Lord, please let this be the last chapter. Don't draw this out like the interminable Shrek movies, Pixar. Go out on a high note!

2. The Karate Kid

Gross: $29,000,000 ($106,254,000)

Screens: 3,663 (PSA: $7,917)

Weeks: 2 (change: -47.9%)

I look forward to China's new movie, The NFL Kid, where a plucky young Chinese boy goes to America and becomes a huge baseball star. The Chinese execs will shrug their shoulders and go, "Eh, same difference, right?"

3. The A-Team

Gross: $13,775,000 ($49,797,000)

Screens: 3,544 (PSA: $3,887)

Weeks: 2 (change: -46.3%)

Now that The A-Team is full-on bombing, look for Bradley Cooper to get back some of that Hangover magic by only agreeing to movies that feature him roofied and/or tasered relentlessly. God knows that certainly could improved Valentine's Day immensely.

4. Get Him to the Greek

Gross: $6,117,000 ($47,857,000)

Screens: 2,592 (PSA: $2,360)

Weeks: 3 (change: -38.5%)

Despite multiple hosting gigs at the MTV Video Music Awards, it seems like America just isn't taking to Russell Brand. Somewhere in a dingy bar in Adelaide, a grizzled Yahoo Serious chuckles a rueful, knowing laugh.

5. Shrek Forever After

Gross: $5,520,000 ($222,977,000)

Screens: 3,207 (PSA: $1,721)

Weeks: 5 (change: -65%)

With a proper animated movie in theaters at last, Shrek took the biggest tumble in the top ten, dropping 65% from last week. But I'm sure deep in the salt mines of Dreamworks, they're already hard a-toil, working on yet another Shrek installment, merely waiting to see what kind of enchanted character Justin Bieber should voice.

7. Jonah Hex

Gross: $5,085,000 ($5,085,000)

Screens:2,825 (PSA: $1,800)

Weeks: 1

And waaaayyyyyy down at number seven is the massive misfire that is Jonah Hex, which is on track to be outgrossed by Marmaduke. Marmaduke! Sorry, Warner Bros., not every comic book adaptation can be The Dark Knight. Sometimes, they've got to be Steel.
