Join Movieline For a Preview Screening of the Sundance-Winner Animal Kingdom!

Hey New Yorkers! Clear your calendar next Monday, June 21, because Movieline is bringing you the social and cultural event of the early summer: A preview screening of the instaclassic Australian crime drama Animal Kingdom, featuring co-stars Jacki Weaver and James Frecheville (UPDATE: And now filmmaker David Michôd) in attendance. They're coming all the the way from Down Under to join us, so do not be shy. Show them some love. Read on for details.

Michôd's feature directorial debut stunned audiences and jurors (and yours truly) alike this year at Sundance, taking home top honors in the fest's World Dramatic Competition. It features Frecheville as a young man pulled into the vortex of his family's diminishing Melbourne crime empire, which his grandmother Smurf (Weaver) oversees with benign, eerie grace. Until... she doesn't. It's chilling, commanding stuff also starring Guy Pearce as a frazzled detective and Ben Mendelssohn as arguably the worst uncle in the history of cinema.

Sony Pictures Classics will open the film Aug. 13, but your friendly Movieline co-editor is hosting a sneak preview next Monday at 92Y Tribeca. Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. screening and Q&A are available now at the venue's Web site; bring your friends, or at least bring yourself and tell your friends what they have to look forward to this summer.

Hope to see you there!
