Michôd's feature directorial debut stunned audiences and jurors (and yours truly) alike this year at Sundance, taking home top honors in the fest's World Dramatic Competition. It features Frecheville as a young man pulled into the vortex of his family's diminishing Melbourne crime empire, which his grandmother Smurf (Weaver) oversees with benign, eerie grace. Until... she doesn't. It's chilling, commanding stuff also starring Guy Pearce as a frazzled detective and Ben Mendelssohn as arguably the worst uncle in the history of cinema.
Sony Pictures Classics will open the film Aug. 13, but your friendly Movieline co-editor is hosting a sneak preview next Monday at 92Y Tribeca. Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. screening and Q&A are available now at the venue's Web site; bring your friends, or at least bring yourself and tell your friends what they have to look forward to this summer.
Hope to see you there!
