5 Surefire Roles to Give Charles Grodin His Proper Comeback

Hey, so that Midnight Run sequel you haven't been waiting for is really happening, huh? Deadline reports that original co-star Charles Grodin -- who had been left out of the initial sequel plans -- has been contacted and would likely consider returning. Grodin hasn't appeared on screen since 1994 -- and no, his brief showing in the forgettable Zach Braff film, The Ex doesn't count -- instead spending his time being a parent and volunteering as an advocate for poor, first-time offenders. Still, God love Midnight Run, but if Grodin is ready to return to feature films, shouldn't he have something better planned than an unnecessary sequel? Here are five roles he should consider.

· Michael Cera's grandfather

Forget the fact that the backlash machine has begun to deem Michael Cera so over, but doesn't this just feel ... inspired? Not only do Grodin and Cera look somewhat alike, they also have that same stilted and mannered delivery. Dear Hollywood: Get these two in a car and make a road trip movie about an earnest grandson reconnecting with his ne'er-do-well grandpa. Thanks.

· The Garry Shandling role in Captain America

Every comeback needs a superhero franchise. And Grodin could do for Captain America what Shandling did for Iron Man 2. That being, provide comic relief and boomer generation class.

· Something in the next Woody Allen movie

Everyone else gets in Woody Allen movies -- even Carla Bruni! Why not Grodin?

· A church elder in Paul Thomas Anderson's Scientology movie

Now that Henry Gibson has passed on, PTA needs to find himself another kitschy '70s muse. And Grodin has the kind of ominous good nature that would play well against Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

· A buddy comedy with Elliott Gould

Two retired cops get one last case! Except the two cops are Charles Grodin and Elliott Gould, the femme fatale is Anjelica Houston and the entire thing is played like an homage to The Long Goodbye. Yes please.
