Jimmy Fallon Recalls How a Forgotten Will Ferrell Character Influenced his Late Night Performance Art

Jimmy Fallon threw one helluva party last night. You should have been there. And by there, I mean on the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon's blog, where the host and his writers threw a virtual viewing party of his show. But instead of just providing commentary of Jake Gyllenhaal doing karate, Jimmy performed an acoustic version of the Bee Gees' "You Don't Love Somebody," fantasized about owning a chain of specialty spinach-dip restaurants and cold-called a fan on speakerphone. Oh, and then he told one behind-the-scenes Saturday Night Live anecdote that has never been heard -- at least via NBC's live-stream -- before.

Occasionally Fallon broke up last night's hour-long party by answering viewers' questions, which included the inciting query, "How did you come up with the Let Us Play With Your Look Game?" The LUPWYL Game is the performance art Late Night sketch where Zach Galifianakis or Sarah Silverman dress up in a white disco suit and play with an audience member's look stonefaced while Jimmy Fallon, also in a white disco suit nearby, sings a high note until he passes out and is dragged offstage.

Fallon explained that the idea was first pitched to Will Ferrell because Fallon's former SNL cast mate had a knack for creating really bizarre characters and then staying in them for a long time when the two worked together at Studio 8H:

"I remember during rehearsal weeks, Will would dress up as this character Ron and never break. Ron looked like a Foot Locker employee -- with the referee shirt, the glasses, a whistle, and he would stay in character all day and just crack us up. There was this closed musical rehearsal for Jimmy Page and P. Diddy. No one was allowed near the stage that day -- not even security. And we were watching the rehearsal from the live feed upstairs and all of a sudden Ron stumbles onto the stage -- in the middle of their performance -- which had a full orchestra and just stands next to Diddy. And Diddy had no idea who Will Ferrell was at this point, and Will just stood there and finally said, 'Hi, I'm Ron.'"
