Tonight in NYC: Come Meet Some of the Toughest Docs Alive

Yes, lame pun, but I can explain: Tonight a few of the subjects of the Oscar-shortlisted documentary Living in Emergency: Stories of Doctors Without Borders will join me and filmmaker Mark Hopkins for a discussion at the Apple Store SoHo. We got docs and docs, and all of them have stirring, jaw-dropping stories to tell. Read on for details.

Hopkins's terrific film follows the harrowing adventures of five Western doctors practicing on behalf of the Nobel Peace Prize-winning aid organization Doctors Without Borders (referred to here by its better-known European name, Médecins Sans Frontières). Their work takes them from Africa to the Middle East to MSF headquarters in Paris; Hopkins dramatically captures his subjects at the crossroads of duty, idealism, shellshock and frustration as they traverse war zones and epidemics, one six-month mission at a time.

No-nonsense Italian powerhouse Dr. Chiara Lepora is kind of a rock star among them, and she'll be on-hand in SoHo (103 Prince Street! 5 p.m.! Take the rest of the day off!) along with Dr. Arnaud Jeannin and Hopkins himself to regale you with some extraordinary tales and raise much-needed awareness for MSF's neverending efforts. Meanwhile, Living in Emergency opens June 4 in limited release before trickling out nationwide; check the film's site for more details. See you there!
