NOOO, it has begun anew! You may remember how taunted we felt last year when, in a burst of total coincidence that came just as the Broadway musical Shrek just happened to be struggling, a whole bunch of people dressed up as the green ogre in public, including Regis Philbin and some wackadoos getting married across the Atlantic. Now, it is happening again. And I think we need to take a closer look.
People brings word of the new Shrek wedding, which (like the last one) again comes from the U.K. and again was first reported by the Daily Mail. Hmmm!
Here's the article, with Movieline's own additions in bold:
When friends [and marketing executives] told Welsh couple Tracey and Vivian Williams they resembled characters from the popular animated Shrek movies - you know, those green ogres ["Look, you're fat, but we can get you in the Daily Mail if you embarrass yourselves at your wedding. Worth it?"] - the two weren't insulted. They embraced it [for press clippings].
"Even though Shrek and Fiona are both green ogres, we didn't take it offensively because we like them so much," Tracey told Britain's Daily Mail. In fact, the couple saw a Shrek movie on their first date - and became super-fans after that. (Wonder if they'll go see the latest addition, Shrek Forever After, in theaters May 21, on their honeymoon?) [OH YEAH I WONDER THAT TOO.]
When it came time for their wedding day, the two painted themselves green, donned fake, green ears and slipped into costume [for pictures that will forever humiliate their children, who will then get embarrassing tattoos in a fit of rebellion at age 16, unintentionally furthering this family's theme of terrible body-painting].
They also recruited friends in the wedding party [and paid crowd-fillers supplied by DreamWorks marketing executives] to play along with the fantasy. The best man dressed up as Monsieur Hood, while the bride's father portrayed evil Lord Farquaad and her mother dressed as the Fairy Godmother. [Alas, the groom's parents dressed up as characters from Toy Story and were barred entry.]
"We watched the films, became addicted and when we decided to get married we both knew how we wanted the wedding to be," the groom, Vivian, told the Daily Mail. "The whole family absolutely loved it. It looked amazing."
Still better than the VMan spread, I suppose.
