Lost in the shuffle of all the breathless speculation about Super 8, the double secret probation new project from director J.J. Abrams and executive producer Steven Spielberg, is the fact that the likely information about the film has been known for a week. Remember back to the simpler time of April 28, when Vulture reported that Abrams and Spielberg were teaming up for "a tip of the hat to [Spielberg's] movies of the '70s and early '80s?" Well, based on the just revealed trailer description for Super 8, that sounds pretty much exactly right. Spoilers ahead, but really: As awesome as it might be, it's still a teaser trailer. This isn't the last five minutes of Lost here. Just read on...
/Film has a point-by-point deconstruction of the Super 8 teaser, but basically here's the gist: In 1979, the Air Force closed Area 51 and moved all of its contents to Ohio. Because, of course. The teaser shows a speeding cargo train that gets derailed by a mysterious pick-up truck that swerves onto the tracks. Amid all the rubble, the camera finds one car intact and it immediately starts bending as something punches at the walls from the inside. Cut to the most awesomely simple marketing tag line ever: "Next Summer. It Arrives."
So, what will Abrams and Spielberg collaborate on? Assuming it isn't another version of The Incredible Hulk -- though, fingers crossed! -- Super 8 is probably some mix of Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. And there will probably be some daddy issues. But there won't be a Cloverfield-like Gila monster. Get your tickets now.
