Chatty Screenwriters: Sherlock Holmes Sequel Could Be 3D

And 3D Week rolls on! If news about 3D plans for Men in Black 3, The Last Airbender and -- most hilariously -- The Green Hornet didn't satiate your need for a third dimension, maybe Sherlock Holmes will. Hey, nothing screams "overproduced 3D effects!" like the tales of a 19th century detective, right, guys?

According to sequel writers Kieran and Michele Mulroney -- who also wrote and directed the superhero deconstruction, Paper Man -- "Sherlock would be great in 3D ... the wind keeps moving in that direction." Well, naturally. Hollywood would put commercials in 3D if they thought it could make them some extra money. Never mind that the effects-work in director Guy Ritchie's first film were some of the worst ever seen in big budget production; make things more complicated for him!

The possibility of a Sherlock Holmes sequel in 3D comes just one week after the Mulroneys also revealed that Brad Pitt is maybe-kinda-sorta reading their script to see if he wants to play Holmes nemesis, Professor Moriarty. Said Kieran Mulroney: "I hope Brad likes it. Let's leave it at that." These two cannot keep their mouths shut, huh?

  • Mike the Movie Tyke says:

I predict that 3D will eventually bite studios in the ass. People will tire of spending $15-$20 on a movie (like "Sherlock Holmes") that has no purpose being in 3D other than to inflate ticket prices. Might not happen right away, but trust me, it'll happen.

I agree. I'm just glad Nolan didn't push back Inception to convert it to 3D as well. That is the next big film I want to see and I'm glad I don't have to pay $15 to see it.

Another voice for the end of 3D in movies. 3D is the Golden Ticket studios have been looking for for years, but surely audiences will tire of the high prices and often incongruous use of the technology.

I disagree guys... 3D is here to stay, the cost of doing 3D has already dropped a lot and it will continue to do so. The movie studios arent stupid, they will know that ticket prices is an issue and just lower the prices when the time is right.
Having said that, "flat" movies will still be with us for decades so if you don't like 3D then there's no real reason to complain.

  • I enjoy Sherlock Holmes, all the books, the tv series ect. This flick is however terrific. Completely brilliant, Robert and Jude are outstanding! Superb acting and a brilliantly righten script. I would recommend you to watch this movie 2 times to completely understand the story line. So on the whole a extremely good film!
