On This Day: An Apatowian Star is Born

Happy April 15, dear reader! Time to join Movieline on another breezy expedition through the historical arcana and milestones that helped shaped the pop culture you know and love today. We've got a Hollywood-changing tragedy to commemorate and some celebrated young stars to wish happy birthdays, so let's get to it. Your taxes can wait!

1912: The RMS Titanic collides with an iceberg in the North Atlantic on her maiden voyage to the United States, sinking within hours. The catastrophe claimed more than 1,500 lives but resulted in James Cameron's eventual Hollywood supremacy, so it all evened out in the end.

1982: Seth Rogen is born in Vancouver to a pair of, in his words, "radical Jewish socialists." He'd be cutting his teeth on stand-up comedy by his early teens, locking in his breakthrough on Judd Apatow's Freaks and Geeks by the end of the '90s, and tapped as the title character of a reportedly unwatchable comic-book movie by the end of the '00s. Make a wish, Seth, and make it good.

1990: After nearly 50 years of reclusion following her film Two-Faced Woman (and a bitter contract squabble with Louis B. Mayer), screen legend Greta Garbo dies in New York City at age 84.

1990: But! Harry Potter star Emma Watson is born on the same day! Garbo-for-Watson may not seem like a fair cosmic trade at the moment, but just wait until you see young Emma hit her own version of Anna Karenina out of the park 10 or 15 years from now.

You forgot to mention how on this day every year I scramble to file my tax return, not realizing the date until it's far too late.

  • Emmasfan says:

I agree.. can't wait to see what Emma does with her career.
    Happy Birthday to her.

So, if something were to "happen" to Miss Emma Watson would the universe give Greta Garbo back?
