Pop Quiz: Guess This Hurt Locker-esque Shakespeare Updating!

Fun time, everyone! A first photo is making the rounds from a currently in-production updating of a William Shakespeare play. If you've been following Movieline's Hollywood Ink trade round-ups (and really, who hasn't), it might come to you, and even then, you might be hard-pressed to say, "Oh, sure -- that looks just like..."

"...an adaptation of Coriolanus." It's not just any adaptation of Coriolanus, though. It's Ralph Fiennes's directing debut, in which he also stars alongside Gerard Butler, Brian Cox and Vanessa Redgrave in Shakespeare's political tragedy about the banished Roman general who teams with his nemesis (Butler) to take revenge on the city that turned against him. They're shooting in Belgrade, however, which is historically much easier to cheat as the bombed-out wasteland than you'll find in the Eternal City.

Another still below features Fiennes in conversation with cinematographer Barry Ackroyd, whose alacrity with war imagery helped push The Hurt Locker to awards glory (though none of his own). So take your motion-sickness pills and get ready for all the high-class shaky-cam Bardery you can stand.

I still can't believe f*cking _Avatar_ won the cinematography Oscar. Ugh to the max.

  • It's a loss I can deal with; I think the cinematographers' branch must have known something we didn't, so I take some consolation in that. Plus: Ackroyd was clearly just practicing for THIS.
