Uma Thurman's Newest Indignity: Forced to Audition for Role Given to Winona Ryder

As far as I'm concerned, Uma Thurman earned her lifetime pass a long time ago: Pulp Fiction, Gattaca, Kill Bill, done, you're enshrined in the pantheon, congrats all around. Unfortunately, Hollywood doesn't feel the same way. On the heels of the weird glee people took when Thurman's obscure indie Motherhood tanked in the U.K. (because how a film does in one British theater is now very important!) comes a dispiriting report from EW that mentions exactly how Thurman lost a role to Winona Ryder in Ron Howard's upcoming Cheaters:

Sources tell EW.com that Ryder beat out a slew of other actresses in her drive to land the part of Geneva, Kevin James' wife. She auditioned twice for the part, outshining the likes of Kate Beckinsale, Carla Gugino and Uma Thurman, who flew herself in for the audition.

First of all, I think we can all agree on two things: those are exactly the actresses we would immediately envision to play the wife of Kevin James, and also, why the hell does Uma Thurman still have to audition for movies, let alone pay for her own flight to audition for a movie? I'll admit that she's had a bad run as of late -- My Super Ex-Girlfriend, The Life Before Her Eyes, and An Accidental Husband all tanked -- but hey, she had a cameo in Percy Jackson at least! It's hard out there for an iconic, Oscar-nominated actress, you guys. Strike while the iron is hot, Carey Mulligan; misstep even once and you'll be asked to read for a part in Rob Schneider's next film, only to lose it to a rebounding Colleen Haskell.
