After Criticism from GLAAD, Ticked-Off Trannies Director Promises Change

Movieline just heard from Israel Luna, the director of the suddenly-hot Tribeca fest entry Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives, a "transploitation" revenge thriller attacked by GLAAD last week. Said the organization then: "The film, its title and its marketing misrepresent the lives of transgender women and use grotesque, exploitative depictions of violence against transgender women in ways that make light of the horrific brutality they all too often face." Luna took issue with that description, though as he told Movieline today, the criticism has convinced him to change the film's trailer:

I was prompted to write this movie in part by the hate crimes against the trans community; which is why the tragic stories of Angie Zapata and Jorge Mercado appear at the beginning of my trailer. My initial thought of placing them there was to give a disturbing reality to my film about transgender violence.

After listening to some of the voices in the trans-community I've decided to remove those references from the trailer. I plan to post a new trailer later this week (Facebook, YouTube and and our movie website.) It seems that the association between their brutal stories and the revenge/thriller content of the film in it's entirety, has been difficult to connect.

Even with this change, I hope the trailer will continue to raise awareness of the horrible truth of rampant violence against trans-women.

Sincerely,

Israel Luna

  • It's a step in the right direction....

  • SunnydaZe says:

In all fairness, they don't know about the human "sepetic" system because they never met you...

  • DarlieB says:

    Well said Sunnydaze.
This Israel was my major sticking point for the entire film. Want to do a cartoon, fine , don't put real peoples names in it. It will be a long long time for members of our community are over the horror of method of those deaths. Good luck.

  • pink floyd says:

I'm all for gay rights, they all should be able to marry, but if a tranny tricks a guy or girl into sex, well, they're asking for it...

  • Colander says:

Pizzedoff, take it from me. Gay jokes are only funny when they're spelled right.

  • Kyle Buchanan says:

They're funnier when they've been deleted by an admin.

  • eat the rich says:

Changing the trailer is like picking the corn out of a turd. This film is still an insulting turd to the trans community and Luna should not insinuate that his gay film has anything at all to do with trans lives.
@Pink Floyd: People like you should just STFU. Homophobia/transphobia is never a valid reason for beating or murdering someone. Why not just tell the person to eff off? If you need to beat someone to prove your manhood then that just indicates that you have none, d!ckless!

  • Sanguine says:

Your obviously ignorant of the transgender condition. Don't say things unless you know what your talking about. There is no trickery involved. Using your argument, someone could justify a man beating a woman because she stuffed her bra.
Introduce a little reason and empathy to the situation,
    Sanguine

  • SunnydaZe says:

But it is starting to make me seem bipolar.

  • SunnydaZe says:

Maybe delete the responses if you are going to delete the original comment so I don't seem insane...
    I won't mind.

  • SunnydaZe says:

Because now my original comment seems aimed at the director of the film.

  • SunnydaZe says:

Sex is always a trick. ALWAYS. So get over it.

  • Colander says:

I think the moral is to not feed the animals.

  • Christie says:

This film should still be ignored. For someone 'believing' that he is doing the right thing by changing the trailer/opening is not resolving the hideous portrayal of transgender women. Sure some of the girls like Erica are in there, but come on what is with the Drag Queens.
We trans-women are just that.... women! Not men in DRAG.
Israel needs to sit down with the leaders of the transgender community for a dialog. I encourage him to reach out to Donna Rose, Mara Keisling, Meghan Stabler and others.

  • SunnydaZe says:

    Tell that to George Carlin.

  • tahrah says:

OMG, "pink floyd" I expect more from you, you obviously have musical taste, just be nice that's all we want. don't hate.

  • NP says:

I'll have to see the whole film before I can make any kind of judgment really.
And I'm still not over GLAAD losing a lot of credibility when they snubbed _Outrage_.

  • OUTRAGED - GLAAD'S A JOKE! says:

    http://planetransgender.blogspot.com/2010/03/transgender-advocates-respond-to.html
I'm sorry but I can't just sit here & read that it was because of GLAAD that this slight modification was implemented to the trailer.
I mean does GLAAD think they have the biggest hand in the cookie jar - GIVE CREDIT TO WHERE CREDIT IS DUE!
IN SAYIN' THAT, GLAAD HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS CHANGE!

  • Willam says:

    to Outraged/Kelli-
You're right! GLAAD didnt protest Ticked-Off Trannies With Knives until you gave them the push. GLAAD, my ass.
And Christie- make up your mind. Should the film be ignored as you said? or should the director actually put effort into talking to your chronies?
which is it? something that deserves to be ignored deserves no attention, not the counter attention (protesting) that you & few like you advocate

  • Tori says:

I don't think a gay guy will ever get it. Drag queens are men in drag...their goal is to get people to laugh at the man in the stilettos, bee hive wig, outrageous makeup, and a dress who is pretending to be a woman. Why doesn't Luna call the moved Ticked Off Drag Queens With Knives? That is more appropriate! We trans women who live our lives every day as women also try to show everyone we meet that we are good decent people...not psychotic people (which is why we want out of the DSM) who molest children and women in public restrooms.
Also Pink Floyd, If I am in a bar, and you make a pass at me...you get what you deserve for making it. I am not "tricking" anyone. I am living my life as me. I don't go to bars to "look"...I go to a bar to let my hair down and enjoy the music, my friends, and a drink or two. If that bothers you, maybe you shouldn't be trying to pick up women. Instead of beating women, you can beat yourself.

  • Wandering Menstrual says:

    @Pink Floyd,
You don't strike me as the kind of guy who gets a lot of attention from the opposite sex, let alone the kind of guy that someone would "trick" into having sex. Either that, or you've been "tricked" before and have a lot of conflicting feelings about how much you enjoyed it. I'm assuming the former, for the reasons already stated.
