When word came from the set of The Sorcerer's Apprentice that there was one car accident after another while shooting, you'd be forgiven for thinking, "Car accidents? I mean, I know it's a Bruckheimer movie, but I thought this would just be about Nicolas Cage wearing a funny wizard hat and shooting some CG fireballs." Now, the full trailer for the film can reveal the bigger picture: It's like Gone in 60 Seconds, but with Nicolas Cage wearing a funny wizard's hairpiece and shooting some CG fireballs.
At least, that's my take-away from the car stunts on display and the centerpiece trailer scene where Cage transforms the automobile he and Jay Baruchel have commandeered into...an even cooler car! (I might have gone with a pegasus.) In the meantime, there's a lot of Street Fighter II-level fireball flinging. Don't get me wrong, though -- I've got nothing against Street Fighter II-level fireball flinging. In fact, if they'd added that to Chloe (and given Amanda Seyfried a scene where she used her lightning kick on a strangely intrigued Julianne Moore), maybe they could have kept Betsy Sharkey on the train a little while longer.
VERDICT: We'll see.
