Friday Box Office: Dragon Slayer

Here's something that might momentarily pause the rush to 3D: The well-reviewed DreamWorks/Paramount flick How to Train Your Dragon performed at the low end of expectations yesterday with a $12 million take, owing perhaps to the stubborn stranglehold that #2 Alice in Wonderland still has on 3D screens. In the third spot was Hot Tub Time Machine with a modest $4.85 million. Were you to travel back to the 80s with that number and factor in higher ticket prices and inflation...well, you don't want to know. Full figures after the jump:

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: $12,000,000 (new)

ALICE IN WONDERLAND: $4,900,000 ($280,000,000)

HOT TUB TIME MACHINE: $4,850,000 (new)

THE BOUNTY HUNTER: $4,100,000 ($30,100,000)

DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: $2,800,000 ($28,500,000)

SHE'S OUT OF MY LEAGUE: $1,100,000 ($23,200,000)

GREEN ZONE: $990,000 ($28,100,000)

SHUTTER ISLAND: $955,000 ($118,400,000)

REPO MEN: $930,000 ($9,100,000)

REMEMBER ME: $690,000 ($15,800,00)

I saw both DRAGON and HOT TUB today and can't understand the fascination with 3D. Maybe I have strange eyes or something but while I saw the "depth" sometimes, nothing jumped out at me besides a couple 2D logos at the beginning. (I saw it in IMAX 3D.)
    The movie, though, is fantastic.
And HTTM is, hands down, the comedy of the year thus far.
Hollywood's seemed to gravitate toward huge tent-pole actioners over the last few years so comedies are needed. (ergo: THE HANGOVER's success.)
HTTM is a hell of a lot of fun. Make sure to stay for the closing credits so you can see how they bill William Zabka (the bad guy from KARATE KID.)
Less than $5m for Friday night? I'm hoping word of mouth makes the Saturday numbers for it jump. (But it could potentially have a problem with the older viewers it's aimed at taking their kids to see DRAGON.)

I think that, like me, a lot of people have decided they're just going to buy HTTM so they can watch it at home with a bunch of pals and a great deal of mind-altering beverages.

And "Repo Men" has cratered completely. I suggest that when HTTM out performs that one the could say, Eat your heart out!, but that be a little cruel considering.

It is because those Dragons look too much like snakes.
