Maybe Tim Burton should plan on directing The Addams Family in 3D after all. For a third straight week, Alice in Wonderland topped the box office in dominating fashion and it now ranks as Burton's highest grossing movie ever. Congrats! No such praise is necessary for The Bounty Hunter co-stars Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler, but despite what you've read, the opening for their film wasn't that disastrous. Find out why—and see the rest of the top-five—after the jump.
1. Alice in Wonderland
Gross: $34.5 million (cume: $265.8 million)
Screens: 3,739 (PSA: $9,229)
Weeks: 3 (change: -45%)
Fun fact: The last time Disney had the top film at the box office for three straight weeks, it was Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest in 2006. Johnny Depp is officially the new Mickey Mouse.
2. Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Gross: $21,800,000 (new)
Screens: 3,077 (PSA: $7,085)
Weeks: 1
Spring is only one day old, but you can already add Chloe Moretz to the list of seasonal winners. Just a few weeks before co-starring in the sure-to-be smash Kick Ass, the thirteen-year-old actress helped Diary of a Wimpy Kid upset The Bounty Hunter to grab the runner up position. Poor Jennifer Aniston. Her competition is getting younger and younger.
3. The Bounty Hunter
Gross: $21,00,000 (new)
Screens: 3,074 (PSA: $6,831)
Weeks: 1
If you look at the opening for The Bounty Hunter through the eyes of Gerard Butler's recent track record, you probably wouldn't call this an embarrassment. Consider that The Bounty Hunter opened to only $6.6 million less than The Ugly Truth, and that film had the benefit of a mid-summer release. Further, it's right in step with Butler's mid-level fall success, Law Abiding Citizen. Saying The Bounty Hunter signals the end of the star system in Hollywood feels just a tad hyperbolic.
4. Repo Men
Gross: $6,151,000 (new)
Screens: 2,521 (PSA: $2,440)
Weeks: 1
That said, say goodnight to Jude Law's career as a leading man. The great calendar year for Universal Pictures rolls on!
5. She's Out of My League
Gross: $6,015,000 (cume: $19,954,000)
Screens: 2,958 (PSA: $2,033)
Weeks: 2 (change: -38.5%)
The good news: Jay Baruchel's comedy barely edged Matt Damon's Green Zone for fifth place and managed to have the lowest decline from last weekend of any movie in the top-ten... including Avatar. The bad news: it's cume still rests under $20 million.
