Startling news over at Variety today, as it's been announced that longtime film critic Todd McCarthy is among several employees being let go from the trade. McCarthy, who worked at Variety for over thirty years and often proved an industry pace-setter with his early reviews, will join chief theater critic David Rooney and six others on the unemployment line. • Dimo says:

While considered a tent pole keeping the struggling Variety banner flying, critic nonetheless shows signs that he too is not immune to the plot constraints and budgetary cutbacks they many similar critics currently find themselves. Devoted auds will miss his "hot off the press" reviews, and the big influence that seemed so assured is now less likely to have a impact in big markets. Look for McCarthy to find a second wind on some web site looking for an established name. Tech credits are outstanding.

Good stuff Dimo. Here's hoping Todd ankles to a new gig soon.

  • Dimo says:

Thanks. After I finished writing it, I realized that I hadn't incorporated "ankle." Way to have my back!
