After a groundswell of support from nearly a half million Facebook users, Robert Pattinson and sassy older women everywhere, Betty White has confirmed that she will be appearing on Saturday Night Live. The comedienne, who has experienced a renaissance this year after playing the wacky, matchmaking grandmother in The Proposal, receiving a SAG Life Achievement Award and starring in a Superbowl Snickers commercial, told People magazine that she doesn't "know why or how" she has so many supporters now, but "it's been wonderful." Now, onto the details of that much-rumored performance at Studio 8H.
Entertainment Weekly reported two weeks ago that Lorne Michaels was finally in negotiations with the Golden Girl to appear on the NBC comedy show with one hitch: White would be performing in a Saturday Night Live: Women in Comedy Special alongside several of her contemporaries, including Molly Shannon and Tina Fey.
But at an event co-hosted by The New Yorker last week, Michaels clarified that the Women in Comedy Special would be a separate episode from White's, although the dates for either have yet to be announced. So unless Michaels comes up with a Saturday Night Live: Senior Citizens in Comedy special, White should get the full 90 minutes that she deserves.
And as for you, Seth Meyers, please start working on sketches that are worthy of the comedy legend and maybe exclude that skit where every family member open-mouth kisses each other at a social event. It's starting to feel like a parody of a Saturday Night Live sketch as opposed to a real one (to the confusion of every viewer in America). Thanks.
