35-year-old Rian Johnson exploded onto the indie film scene in 2005 with his feature debut, Brick -- a captivating noir that both honored the form and subverted it by setting the mystery at a suburban California high school.
Brick's critical and commercial success opened doors for Johnson. His second feature, an idiosyncratic family heist movie called The Brothers Bloom, brought him a budget that could have paid for 40 Bricks and what can only be described as a dream cast, including Mark Ruffalo, Adrien Brody, Rachel Weisz, Robbie Coltrane, and Rinko Kikuchi. It opens this Friday, May 15th, in L.A. and New York.
