The NBC fallout continued last night in a bizarre sequence of events. Jay Leno fired a few shots at Conan O'Brien, the very person he should be supporting if he wants to maintain any of the golden demo that Conan has brought The Tonight Show in the past seven months. Meanwhile, Coco sat back and let Ricky Gervais drive three acts of the Tonight Show into the ground with a flurry of curse words and insults directed at him and the network. And then, Jimmy Fallon hopped on air to offer up his sincerest thanks to both of his feuding lead-ins without actually mentioning the feud. After the jump, Movieline has compiled the top five moments from last night's after hours programming, including one host's thoughts on that Avatar sex scene.
5. Jimmy Fallon Finally Address ConanGate
Like Movieline's Unsung Hero Carson Daly, Jimmy Fallon managed to not address the shake-up at NBC all week. This was hard, because there are only so many karaoke segments, rounds of Taboo and Air Drum Challenges you can stage with audience members. Seriously, it's a lot more difficult than it seems. But Fallon abstained all week until Wednesday night. Realizing that Conan O'Brien saved his show from the ratings vacuum of 1 a.m., Fallon delivered his thanks. Someone, hit the lights.
4. Leno Targets Conan
For the first time in this whole NBC scuffle Jay Leno took aim at his Tonight Show successor and predecessor in last night's monologue.
3. Letterman's Advice For Pinheads and Jack Bauer in a Dress
There are some late night hosts that do their best entertaining sitting behind a desk. Without board games, multi-million dollar race tracks or Chola makeovers, David Letterman entertained the Ed Sullivan Theater last night with tales of his own dealings with the "mouth breathers" over at NBC. (Bonus points for railing Jimmy Fallon harder than Carson Daly). And then, Letterman threw to Kiefer Sutherland in women's clothing.
2. Conan Interviews Ricky Gervais, Potential NBC Talk Show Host
Conan's best shots at NBC last night were speculations about how the network might try to change this year's winter Olympics: "Replace the flags on the giant slalom course with breached NBC contracts"...."Reserve the right to cancel ski jumps mid-jump." After, Conan welcomed Ricky Gervais to the stage and sat back as the British comedian took control of the situation.
Yesterday, we floated the idea that this weekend's Golden Globes host should really take the helm of the Tonight Show and last night, the comedian proved that he would be a fit, if only he had an opening in his schedule and the ability to censor his language.
1. Stephen Colbert Takes A Bold Anti-Avatar Stance
Sometimes you need to break up your late night disaster news with other disaster news. In last night's case, Stephen Colbert offered up the perfect palate cleanser with a segment called "Movies That Are Destroying America," in which he addressed Avatar, it's curious ponytail sex scenes and its depressing side effects.
