Precious, Basterds Lead SAG Award Nominations

sag_basterds.jpg

The Screen Actors Guild this morning passed along its nominees for the 16th annual SAG Awards, which didn't yield much in the way of surprises. But beyond Precious, Inglourious Basterds and Up in the Air leading the way with three nominations apiece, the list (published in full after the jump) wasn't without its minor intrigues. [UPDATE: Accidentally omitted TV nominees are below now as well.]

Considering George Clooney, Anna Kendrick and Vera Farmiga were all individually nominated in their own categories, you probably shouldn't read too much into Up in the Air's sorta-snub in the big ensemble prize. Still, it's not very often (if ever) that an Oscar-winning Best Picture doesn't even get nominated in SAG's top spot. So in terms of precedent, we may or may not be on to something new this year.

The remaining individual categories aren't too far off what you can probably expect for the Oscars, though Daniel Day-Lewis and Marion Cotillard stand a better-than-even chance of breaking through in Actor and Actress. And Basterds' Diane Kruger knocking off A Single Man's Julianne Moore is probably some once-in-an-awards-season phenomenon for which a hapless Weinstein Company Oscar strategist is getting an earful from Harvey as I type. Won't happen again, Harv, I promise.

  • GeezLouise says:

I don't quite get that last part. "Basterds" is a Weinstein company film, is it not? And what's more, Diane Kruger is a close friend of Harvey's wife.
Why should he be anything other than pleased about her nomination?

  • Because Basterds has already made its $100 million and he's spent all autumn investing in Julianne Moore and the women from Nine as his designated choices in the Supporting Actress race. Those are the nominations he wants/needs, for business's sake. "Close personal friend"? Come on.

  • GeezLouise says:

All the talk I've heard all around town was about Melanie Laurent and Kruger from Basterds as strong contenders. That certainly seemed to be where the focus was to me. I don't get the impression at all that Weinstein wasn't investing as much in Basterds and its cast--quite the opposite in fact. They've been honoring Quentin at parties and film festivals all summer and fall with cast and Harvey always in attendance. It's been reported again and again that Weinstein was full on the Oscar campaign with Quentin, the film, Waltz, Kruger, et al.
So Georgina Chapman and Kruger are good friends. LOL. What of it? What is the problem with mentioning it?

  • NP says:

I'm actually thrilled to see Diane Kruger nominated here. I thought she and Christoph Waltz gave the two best performances in that film. I understand that with the linguistic complexities of his role, people were immediately talking about him, but it surprised me that nobody was championing Kruger's performance...she is great.

  • agree pretty much with what you're saying here, not sure about the poster above me though.
