Meredith Baxter Comes Out on Today Show (Sha La La La)
This morning on the Today Show, Matt Lauer introduced Meredith Baxter, America's beloved Family Ties matriarch, and immediately asked her to "reveal something about herself." Wait what? The camera turned to an uncomfortable Baxter who admitted that after three marriages (that resulted in five children), she has realized that she is a lesbian. The actress explained that she lives a "very out" life in Los Angeles, is happily committed to a general contractor named Nancy, and recently vacationed on a cruise with 1,200 lesbians. So what was the impetus for the sudden announcement?
A tabloid was about to break the story, and Baxter wanted to break the news in her "own words" to Matt Lauer. In the heartfelt segment, the breast cancer advocate discussed how her sexuality relates to politics and explained that even though she is now a lesbian, she "is still the same woman." And yes, Alex and Mallory know. So let's extend a warm, psychic Movieline hug to Mrs. Keaton.

I for one am completely offended by this! I will no longer watch the programs or movies she has not been making lately!
She's been married five times, and now she can't get married in California at all. Still, good for you Mrs. Keaton. Welcome to the tribe.
It is my opinion that we, as humans, have no place to place personal judgment upon any other human beings, when it pertains to their individual lives. I applaud Meredith for her courage to come forward, and make this statement in her own words, on her own platform, before the scrap media had the opportunity to publish their story. Honestly - one's sexuality is nobody's business. But great job Meredith in setting the stage on your own terms. While folks may take personal offense with someone, for a host of different reasons, we still cannot deny their artistic or professional abilities. Meredith Baxter is a phenomenal actress. It is unfortunate, for her, that she lived such a large segment of her life while not realizing that she was gay. I am a firm believer that we do not 'become gay'. Folks are born that way. Meredith surely suffered a great deal of personal turmoil until she discovered this facet of herself. Kudos Meredith!

I wrote a novel about a woman coming out late-in-life called Seeking Sara Summers. For these women it isn't about getting their 15 minutes of fame (a criticism I saw of Meredith Baxter on another site), it's about getting a life. I think it takes a tremendous amount of courage to simply be who you are.
Well done under the circumstance of living in an adolescent society.
