Obscure, Gorgeous Secret of Kells Edges Out Ponyo, Ice Age 3 in Annie Awards Race

The International Animated Film Society's Annie Awards nominations are out. Here's the shortlist for Best Animated Feature:

· Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs -- Sony Pictures Animation

· Coraline -- Laika

· Fantastic Mr. Fox -- 20th Century Fox

· The Princess and the Frog -- Walt Disney Animation Studios

· The Secret of Kells -- Cartoon Saloon

· Up -- Pixar Animation Studios

Most notable here is the omission of Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo and the $879 million-earning (not a typo) Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, and the inclusion of The Secret of Kells.

The what?

Yup, The Secret of Kells. An Irish-Belgian-French co-production that never even saw a U.S. release (it premiered in February at the Berlin Film Festival, then saw releases in its three origin countries shortly after that), it's the story of 12-year-old boy named Brendan who lives in 9th Century Europe, and meets an illustrator monk who teaches him the beauty of art.

The look of it is absolutely gorgeous, featuring director Tomm Moore's very rudimentary characters set against lushly illustrated backgrounds, in a style that calls to mind Genndy Tartakovsky's work on Samurai Jack and the Caldecott Medal-winning children's book illustrator Nicolas Sidjakov.

  • The Winchester says:

No Battle For Terra love? For shame. It's this year's Delgo!

  • Morgan says:

Wow, the Secret of Kells looks amazing. Any idea of when it might come out on DVD?

  • Daft Clown says:

I remember checking out the Ponyo trailer. Watching an amorphous, ginger-topped sea nymph soaring to and fro made me feel funny.

  • Hey, thanks for the kind words! I'm working hard as the US distributor to get The Secret of Kells in as many theaters as possible. Everyone in the LA area can catch the one week Oscar-qualifying run at the AMC Burbank 8 starting this Friday, Dec 4-10 (director Tomm Moore will be doing a Q&A after the Sunday show, with tix almost gone).
Kells is then set to open across the country in March 2010, and will probably hit DVD in late summer next year. Hope everyone has a chance to see it!

  • GSW says:

I got to see it in Burbank.
    Twice.
Loved it! Absolutely beautifully designed and animated. Great voice work and equally great music. There was a Q&A with Tomm Moore after the second time I saw it and he was very interesting and personable. I really hope it gets a good release. I expect it would do well.
I'll definitely be back to see it again.
