This week at the Savannah Film Festival, we asked Emmy Rossum, who was here as an honored guest and also for a screening of her upcoming indie flick, Dare, to play "My Favorite Scene" with us. She kindly indulged us -- twice.
"A favorite scene would be a Meryl Streep scene in The Hours where she's in a kitchen and cracking eggs or something? And it was the first moment that it really made sense [that] all these actresses that I'd worked with growing up had said things about using objects to physically express what they were feeling, but I didn't understand exactly how good of a tool it was until I saw this scene where she's very emotional and talking to her daughter about life or death or something. And she's handling these eggs and it's such a delicate thing, but she's so upset. It's interesting to me how it was used."
Not that The Hours is necessarily a favorite movie of Rossum's, she noted: "I just remember that scene with the eggs."
"I also love the scene in Fargo with the guy's foot in the wood chopper," she added. "It's the most jarring, surprising, alarming but hysterical thing you've ever seen. You're like, 'Wow, that's a boot in a wood chopper,' and the whole rest of the person is sprayed all over the snow. It's really fucked up."
