Biggest Loser Desecrates The Nation's Capital: A Photo Essay

BiggestLoser5.jpg

A year ago, American folk legend Pete Seeger celebrated President Obama's inauguration by performing a rare concert at the Lincoln Memorial. Last night, the Biggest Loser contestants celebrated Obama's first year as president by storming the same monument for dramatized, Subway-sponsored weigh-ins. Fortunately for those that missed last night's historic episode, we've captured the photo highlights, including the money shot of the president biting into a Low-Fat Buffalo Chicken Sub.

America is so dissatisfied with the pace of health care reform that Bob and Jillian paraded their cast of Biggest Losers into the nation's capital last night to show the President what he is up against. Fortunately, Obama caught wind of the stunt and skipped out of D.C. before NBC production crews raided his turf, saving him of any accidental Jennie-O promotions. With the commander-in-chief out of town, BL marked its territory all over Washington as host Alison Sweeney played tour guide.

Jefferson Memorial-Washington Monument Headset Group Exercise

The BL crew kicked off their tour at the Jefferson Memorial, where Ali Sweeney explained that this Founding Father "wanted to preserve our rights as individuals" as an introduction to their individual challenge. Each player then hit the streets to entice as many strangers wearing unsuitable workout apparel as possible to gather at Washington Monument for a mass workout led by Bob and Jillian. The workout reached its patriotic fever pitch when Bob mounted a firefighter as he completed a set of push-ups (This really happened).

Capital Building Yoga Ball Challenge

After the Senatorial Summit during which Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and Senator Robert Casey of Pennsylvania spent an entire afternoon speaking with the contestants, the group hoofed it to the Capital Building for more Immunity Challenge humiliation. While balancing one foot on a tiny brick, contestants fought to stand erect with a yoga ball over their heads because as Ali duly noted, "the key to success is balance." The yoga balls were then recycled during the contestants' last chance workout at the posh Four Seasons gym.

For the final stage of the immunity challenge, the remaining contenders raced to run 206 steps in front of the White House. The 206 steps represented the 206 contestants that have competed on NBC's weight loss show.

Quit your belly-aching and be proud of this show and what it does. Unlike most reality TV, where Americans are inspired to be conniving, underhanded, and materialistic, this show is an inspiration to be better than you are. It's a wake up call and literally, it has saved lives. I applaud this show for taking its issues and causes to D.C. and you should be abashed for throwing such negative light on it. If President Obama had a problem with the contestants in the White House, he would have said no.

Clearly I was in the kitchen making a club sandwich when that firefighter got underneath my fiancé, Bob. It took a while to open that second jar of mayo, I've got to start working out.
And if that Lincoln statue isn't thinspiration, I don't know what is.

Biggest Loser is just one long commercial, with the trainers and the contestants pushing one "healthy" item after another. It's a reality show like any other reality show. The game playing is happening right from the start. Yes, people lose weight and a few change their lives, but let's not make it out to be something it's not. Just the fact that they make the male contestants take off their shirts for the ridiculously over-dramatic weigh-ins for the viewers at home to have to look at, or show people puking in the gym, should tell you that this show is all about advertising and the gross-out factor.

    Slow news day??
It's the one tv show that shows Americans as they really are: fat. Real Americans who need to lose weight & doing it... correctly. Sometimes they really succeed & sometimes they don't. It's pretty realistic & honest.
So, how can something so representative of our nation be so offensive to you?
I mean, really... what BETTER place to do it?
Everyone's so damned patriotic these days... everyone has a big opinion on every single thing going on, except at the ballot box, of course... so why not show real Americans losing real weight, eating real [healthy] food, in America's capitol? Isn't this exactly what Obama stands for? There's more media available to him than to any president before him. Not to mention that he published his own book & setting up his website, etc. BEFORE taking office, so he's obviously going to use the media even more now that he's in office. Get the message out by any means necessary, right? So, as far as I can tell, this is exactly what the President wants & he will of course support making this nation's citizens healthier.
I would certainly hope so anyway, since he IS an American citizen & he's supposed to want what's best for his fellow American citizens. He & his family are real people & are willing to give & share with other real people. Remember: Obama wasn't born with a silver spoon & neither was his wife. They have a much better grasp of what real life is about. Our nation's capitol is FOR the people of our nation.
And don't forget either that most Americans are actually pro-capitalism, so what's wrong with the show promoting its sponsors? Isn't that what every radio & tv show has done since their inception(s) over a century ago? We all hate ads, but how else are they supposed to pay their bills?
Nothing was desecrated in any way, shape or form.
And, frankly, the fact that you said it was, just by some regular old fat Americans being there, participating in a very American situation, is quite offensive, not to mention that it shows you don't have any grasp whatsoever on what is & isn't American.
Go find something real to whine & complain about. Or better yet, try, for just a minute, to find something GOOD to say!

I agree with Casandra above. I guess it's all in they way you look at things, some people can find the bad in everything. I don't think that way. I think the show does inspire a lot of people. Maybe if everyone focused on the positive and instead of the negative life would be much more pleasant.

I love the show and still thought it was pretty offensive and pointless. And I am usually a big fan of pointless, offensive things. I was okay with the talking to the senators about the obesity epidemic and eating in the White House kitchen and talking about the benefits of victory gardens and all that jazz. But using the Lincoln memorial as nothing but a dramatic backdrop for what truly is a two hour long commercial for Jenny-O turkey? That sucks.
