Ricky Gervais has made a habit of scene-stealing at the most unlikely sort of forum -- awards ceremonies -- and thus, it's no surprise that his name has long been floated to host one. Congratulations are due to the actor, then, because he's been selected to host the 67th Annual Golden Globes in January. Still, there's something a little weird about this.
Namely, it's the fact that the Golden Globes have gone without a host for nearly fifteen years, and to select one now (not to mention one whose name was often tossed around to host the Oscars) is a major step in the Globes' reinvention from freewheeling Hollywood beer bust to "The Academy Awards, but earlier." Perhaps Gervais felt like he needed a starter ceremony to prep him for his seemingly inevitable stint as Oscar host down the line, but the fact remains that the Globes have a host selected and the Oscars still don't. The 2010 awards season: wackier than ever!
