Autumn has begun, and while that means colorful displays of nature's brilliance and smells of cider for some parts of America, in the world of television that means TBS will start overwhelming us with wave after wave of network promo spots. Most of the year, TBS is a repository for Seinfeld reruns and Debra Messing film vehicles, but occasionally they bust out some new programming. Last year it was Frank Caliendo's cavalcade of Frank Caliendos. This year, it's George Lopez. Lopez Tonight does not premiere until November 9, but it's never to early to have the audience pleading for a show to start so the interminable promos can stop. Grab your glove, it's time to catch some buzz.
George Lopez has been promoting his show as "a block party every night" since this summer. One block party a summer is fun but if there was a block party every night, TBS audiences might get kind of pissed off. All of those people on the street playing volleyball. Where would they park? The comedian maintains that there will be dancing, spontaneous interviews (no desk!), lots of hanging out and presumably punchlines delivered in Mexican street slang. As we've seen this past year though, even the most untalented talk show host (Fallon) can pull off most of these things without making his late show watchable.
In the videos below, see how Lopez sets expectations for his TBS talk foray absurdly high by declaring that he will change the current administration of late night to President Obama (first) and then an angry black man that says something about his "Down Syndrome baby" (second). If you don't laugh during TBS's stock promo (third) in which Lopez says that his show "is recommended by four out of five dentists who like to party," then you probably won't enjoy Lopez Tonight.
