· In a bit of news that will no doubt plunge every struggling writer in Hollywood into a teeth-gnashing bout of existential crisis, former Hills star Lauren Conrad sold the film rights to her bestselling, semi-autobiographical novel L.A. Candy to the folks at Temple Hill Entertainment. The producers say they "loved her take," adding: "Her book is an honest portrayal of what it must be like to set out to be normal, then sign on to become famous and eventually realize, wow, this isn't at all what I'd planned for myself." Perhaps the best part: It's a trilogy. And why not? Her Les Deux sex-tape ordeal alone can surely sustain at least a hundred pages' worth of exposition. [Variety]

· If The LC Saga isn't doing it for you, how about a fancy new big-screen adaptation of Thomas the Tank Engine? The beloved children's-book character and his troublemaking pals have apparently done all the toy-and-tome marketing they can do on TV; HIT Movies has picked up the film option and assigned Shrek the Third screenwriter Josh Krausner to a new adaptation. · Jessica Alba is in negotiations to join the cast of Little Fockers, in which she'd play an "attractive pharmaceutical rep whose looks wreak havoc on male characters in the story." Translation: Universal needs to draw young men to their films if it has any hopes of staying open through 2010. [THR]
· John C. Reilly will join Ed Helms in Cedar Rapids, starring as a family man who turns a insurance-sales conference into his own personal bacchanal. [THR]
· Max "Son of Henry" Winkler just keeps moving up and up, nabbing Uma Thurman to star in his feature writing-directing debut Ceremony. Thurman will star as a soon-to-be-married woman who happens to be the object of young Michael Angarano's affection. Like The Graduate, sort of, but without the silly Katherine Ross distraction.
