Nightmare on Elm Street Trailer: Freddy Krueger Died for Your Sins

After promising a whole lotta Krueger back in July and offering a whole lotta nothin', the onus was on the producers of the revamped A Nightmare on Elm Street to include a big reveal in the brand-new trailer. And while their new take on Freddy's burned face does indeed make an appearance, it's clear that the real star is Freddy's wounded psyche.

We're certainly not surprised by the increased emphasis on Freddy's feelings, since producers have been warning us all along that this new version would trade the wisecracking villain we're used to (now played by Jackie Earle Haley) for a darker, less Catskills-y take. Still, it's interesting to see Freddy's fiery backstory realized onscreen to such a fetishistic degree; as shot by musicvideo director Samuel Bayer, it appears to play like some mad cross between the warehouse fire that created Two-Face in The Dark Knight and the slow-mo Americana porn that Armageddon's montages were made of. We created a monster in the shadow of the American dream, and now the sins of the father are visited on our sexy, sexy children.

VERDICT: Jury's out.

It definitely has the slick music video look you would expect from a Platinum Dunes production.
I mean what made the original stick in the mind was the imagery of a cosmetically perfect suburbia that seemed to be rotting from within. This opens on a bleak industrial hell-scape with an over the top slick gritty look, that practically screams: "Ooh scary."
I don't get the feel of a nightmare, I get the feel of an Emo-band music video with a monster running around it.
    Feh.

I can't wait to get all of the five-year-olds in the neighborhood together and show them this!

Freddy sounds a lot like Nixon.
