Oprah Names Her Favorite Mad Men-Era Things

During today's Mad Men-themed episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, the host raked her hair up into a beehive, dressed her entire audience in '60s-era outfits and summoned Don and Betty Draper to set. Just when America's housewives didn't think their living rooms couldn't get any more swingin', Oprah revealed her Favorite Things From The '60s. Usually, when Oprah begins an episode by unraveling her scroll of Favorite Things, the audience walks away with over $1,000 in complimentary Oprah-approved gifts. Today's audience wasn't quite as lucky though. Instead of leaving with the anticipated cases of expensive highball glasses, Jon Hamm-signed Mad Men paraphernalia and cartons of vintage cigarettes, they instead had to haul boxes full of Oprah's Most Nostalgia-Inducing Toys out to their cars.

1. Chatty Cathy Dolls

Oprah explained that growing up, she desperately wanted the Mattel doll but her family could not afford the $16 toy in 1962. The audience squealed when Oprah shared, "[Mattel] told me that I can have her after this show!"

2. Barbie

Another collectible doll, Oprah? The talk show host walked a few Jackie Kennedy-inspired '60s Barbies around her desk to the growing annoyance of everyone in the studio.

3. Slinky

Oprah explained her choice: "Nothing says '60s like a Slinky." And nothing says "A disappointing edition of Oprah's Favorite Things like a Slinky."

4. Mr. Potato Head

While Oprah couldn't get her Chatty Cathy doll until now, her family was able to afford Hasbro's spud toy.

5. Etch-a-Sketch

Hmmm, what other classic toys invented in the '60s can Oprah add to her list?

6. Operation

Milton Bradley's board game hit toy stores in 1965, making it a convenient pick for her list.

7. GE Hairsetter

It is with the seventh item on Oprah's list that the theme changes from Toys to Beauty Aids. Oprah tries to get the audience excited by using a lot of enthusiasm when she introduces her favorite beauty item for the decade.

8. GE Trip-Mate Cordless Automatic Toothbrush

We're sensing a new pattern here.

And drumroll for what is usually the most expensive item...

9. Maybelline Mascara

Oprah explained that when the beauty line introduced their first eyelash lengthening tool in the '60s, "It was revolutionary...Now, we just sort of take all of this for granted."

Well, at least the audience earned a consolation prize after the lackluster Oprah-gifting: a surprise appearance by "The Beav" AKA Jerry Mathers.
