For Real This Time: The Avatar Trailer

avatar_2mv

After numerous teases and fakes (one of which came awfully close to fooling even Movieline), an honest-to-goodness Avatar trailer has found its way on to the Web. Yes, it's a French import sans dialogue, but you're not here for the script anyway, right? Watch after the jump.

I think the best approach to this installment of the Two-Minute Verdict is to simply let 'er rip and get out of the way. If you don't already have your tickets for Avatar Day (and at this point, you might double check), then you've got Dec. 19 circled; nothing will dissuade you, and nothing probably should. Take it away, Mr. Cameron.

VERDICT: Duh.

Hmmm, looks like Handy Smurf and Vanity Smurf got into the steroids locker again and are suffering from 'roid rage. Someone really needs to put a better lock on that thing.

  • abe gilbert says:

The movie looks cool, but the video player is absolutely unacceptable.
it took five minutes to load 15 seconds of video.

  • JudgeFudge says:

Wow. Well, that was great. Reminds me of Aliens or the Abyss.
Not to be this guy, but those aliens still look CGI to me.

  • snickers says:

The trailer actually works really well without any dialogue. Still looks like videogame cut-scenes, but I'm sure it'll look impressive on a big screen and/or in 3-D.

  • np says:

I have to be that guy too. They look awkward and cartoony.

  • Furious D says:

I have to agree with the whole "video game cut scene" comparison, and I'm wondering if as much effort was put into the story as was put into the visuals. I mean they did spend $300,000,000 on making it.
I'm afraid I still can't shake the smell of turkey.

  • Gary says:

wow. much less "photo real" that I was expecting...and I had already lowered my expectations after reading comments from Comic-con. Let's hope there is some more texture and realism on the big screen.

  • CiscoMan says:

Not to criticize other commenters, because I don't necessarily disagree about the CGI-ness, but when did we all become SFX experts? Considering it's a December release, they are certainly not done, plus... when did we all become SFX experts? I'm never been concerned so much with photorealism as with continuity i.e. as long as one shot doesn't scream FX versus the next shot which is obviously a practical set. Simmer down.
    Also, I'm in.

  • sweetbiscuit says:

I'm no expert, but it either looks real or it doesn't, right? I'm still in.

  • Dimo says:

Up up + down down + circle square circle triangle = galactic disappointment!

  • Brilliant Orange says:

    That's funny. This looks terrible.

  • Colander says:

Yeah, I'm sure it will be pleasant, and 'cool', but I can't really imagine what this movie is going to offer me that the mere thought of the movie isn't already providing.

  • MCU says:

    Holy...shit.
(On a completely unrelated note, in blog commenting form, how does one distinguish a good "holy shit" from a really, really, really bad "holy shit"?)

  • JudgeFudge says:

I remember when Star Wars 4 came out, thinking "Gee, I know there's a shit-ton of the best CGI in this movie, I should get used to thinking it looks real" but I never did. Nine years later, I still don't. The stop animation At-Ats in Empire Strikes back still look cooler and more real than the best CGI, including the aliens in Distrcit 9 and the clip above (I know its not finished). There's just a difference between filming organic effects, and CGI. If Avatar can't overcome this hurdle, I don't know if any movie can.

  • Badfish says:

Not sure... I have alternate visions of you, with a fan-boy boner in one, and a snarling, snarky face of disdain in the other.

  • what an aweseme trailer, oh yes. says:

    "Video cannot be found".

  • SunnydaZe says:

They pulled that video so fast you would think it was footage of Michael Jackson having lunch with John Hughes.

  • Pamela Strangeways says:

I loved Cameron for T2 and for Abyss. Titanic was passible, although I certainly wasn't the target audience. So I was really looking forward to this one, his return to science fiction. Um, I saw the trailer earlier today and yeah, Jar Jar Binks all the way. Hopefully the prevew tomorrow will be better, but I'm definitely disappointed.

  • Edward says:

It's pretty amiazing but myabe it would look better in IMAX 3D i hope so. I Love all most every James Cameron Movie so may be i'll love this one to.

  • T_Naifeh says:

Re: the comparison between this and two of the worst flops in movie history, Delgo and Terra, I think as far as the trailers are concerned, it's the lack of annoying exposition, and the trust that the audience will "get it," that makes this a move I'd maybe consider spending the money on. Of course, I'm sure they're going to ruin it with the next trailer, in which we will here the lines "IN A WORLD..." and the modern classic "IT HAS BEGUN."
